All Smiles and Coo's

Austin is interacting with us more now. He looks at us and listens, then smiles and coo's. It usually happens right after his feedings, when we get all the burps out and put him in his bouncy chair.

Austin had his 4 month checkup with the pediatrition today. The doctor was happy with his progress and gave him an A+ on his report card for both physical and development areas. He has gained over 2 pounds since the last time he saw him despite his feeding issues. He said that since he is gaining weight, we should keep doing what we have been. He now weighs 10 pounds 3 ounces, is 21 1/3 inches long and has a head circumfrence of 14.8 inches.

Austin also had a followup appoinment with the cardiologist last week to see how his heart murmer is coming along. They found that his PDA and atrial septum defect are the exact same size as the last reading. The doctor said she is not worried about either one as he shows no signs of distress. She doesn't want to see him again until he is one year old and feels that Austin can close both on his own. She said if they are both still open at one year, they will close it through a percutaneous interventional method. This is a process which they go in through the femoral vein or femoral artery and place a coil to make an embolus, which closes the PDA without open heart surgery. She said it has a really high success rate (99.95% I believe). So we hope he closes it on his own, but are also comforted with the fact that there is a non-surgical procedure with a high success rate if he cannot.

He also had his best day of eating yesterday and finished 20.9 ounces. He usually does bad after he burps because it hurts him and a little bit comes back up, then he loses interest. So we decided to let him keep going and finish his bottle before we burped him. This strategy works really well even though it goes against all the books on how to properly feed a baby. We asked the pediatrition today if this strategy was acceptable and he said absolutely. So we are crossing our fingers that we found a way to feed him that is more comfortable for him.
